Rep. Melissa Hortman: A champion for moms in Minnesota
We will honor her by continuing the work, speaking the truth, and never backing down | 2 min read
Minnesota is grieving. On June 14, 2025, House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were assassinated. Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot in their home. And many more community leaders and advocates–here and across the country–were targeted simply for standing up for what’s right.
Rep. Hortman was a champion for families in Minnesota.
She advanced real support in our state: paid family and medical leave, free school meals, expanded child tax credit, and greater funding for child care for low-income families.
She was also a mother of two.
This weekend was hard. Especially for parents and everyone fighting for better.
It also reminded me how important community is and why I'm so grateful for Chamber of Mothers. A safe space that chooses hope and action. A space where we can channel this grief, fear, and injustice into positive change.
We need more compassion, empathy, and kindness–until that becomes the norm. Not hate and violence.
For anyone needing community: Please join Chamber of Mothers MN Chapter this Saturday, June 21st at Justice Page Middle School as we grieve, regroup, and keep doing the work that Rep. Hortman so courageously led 💜
Chamber of Mothers MN Chapter check-in email on June 16, 2025.
