How we’re bringing ACOG’s new prenatal guidance to life | 5 min read
This was the maternal health gift of 2025.
Almost a year ago, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) released new prenatal care guidance. I write more about that on LinkedIn here.
Here’s what it calls for:
- Early screening of social and mental health risks
- Flexible care (telemedicine + home monitoring)
- Closed-loop referrals to clinical + community services
- Real support and connections to housing, food, transportation, and other social services
This was a big deal.
This is the care all new moms deserve. Tailored, flexible care built around patients ans their outcomes–not just visits.
And when ACOG makes it official, people pay attention.
The status quo isn’t working. You can have 10+ prenatal visits–and still feel completely unsupported. Too many moms experience mistreatment, racism, mental health challenges, and unnecessary crises.
That’s exactly what we’re changing at Delfina.
We’re shifting prenatal care from reacting to prevention and early action:
🌟 Early screening for mental health and social risk
🌟 Early insights for OBs to identify and act on risk
🌟 Whole-person care (doulas, therapists, lactation consultants, nutritionists, yoga instructors)
🌟 Tools that help moms stay engaged and healthy
🌟 Connected data–across apps, devices, EHRs, and claims–to show it actually works
After joining Delfina, I had the honor of meeting Dr. Alex Peahl, co-author of this guidance.
We talked about how catalytic this moment was for maternal health. But guidance alone wasn’t enough.
Real change means building partnerships across the health ecosystem.
It takes continuous evaluation of what works. Care models that respect a patients’ values, identify risk early (then does something about it), and build trust.
Delfina is already delivering this vision. And we're not letting this gift sit on a shelf.
