My story and why I care about empowering new moms | 2 min read

Introduction

Thanks for visiting my website!

I’m Nancy, a mom of two, and I believe all new moms deserve to feel empowered during their transition to motherhood.

My story and why I care

I had my first daughter in 2021. After working in healthcare for 15+ years, I left my job when she was 9 months old. Frankly, I struggled to balance the new demands of motherhood with work. I wanted to be more present for my daughter, my partner, and myself.

During my transition to motherhood, I was privileged to have parental leave, childcare, and mental health support. And it was still tough. In an ideal world, I’d wish this for everyone. But I’ve become acutely aware of how our systems–healthcare, employers, and governments–fail to support new parents.

I can’t stop thinking how difficult this experience must be for someone without access. I’m reminded of this regularly, how common and complex this problem is for new families, when I began volunteering for Postpartum Support International in 2022.

During my break, I went through a major self-exploration process, thanks to support from my incredible life coach. I wanted to figure out what I wanted to do next and the impact I want to have.

After a lot of reflection and work, my purpose became clear to me:

I want to help build a better world for new moms.

Introducing a new resource to empower new moms

In July 2022, I launched www.nancygohkelly.com, so I can share my story of what real motherhood looks like. My hope is that this resource sparks conversation to dedefine the maternity care experience, normalizes mental health care, and empowers new moms:

  • I want to help new moms feel less alone: The transition to motherhood is HARD. I truly love being a mom, but after my own transition, I couldn’t believe moms didn’t talk more about how hard it is. The more we open up about our experiences, the less stigma and guilt there will be.

  • I want to help fix the system: After being a pregnant patient, twice, I’ve become acutely aware of how our systems—healthcare, employers, and government—have failed to support new moms. The status quo isn’t working and I want to help change this by working with organizations fixing structural gaps to help new moms.

Thanks for taking the time to support me on my journey. I can’t wait for what’s next and hope my experience and this resource can help at least one other new mom out there.
