Series: Mothers Day isn’t enough (What moms really want)

Moms want real support — and a system that actually cares | 3 min read

Mother’s Day is nice.

This year, I celebrated my fourth Mother's Day. Being a mom of two is the best gift of my life.

But if there’s one thing I hope this series makes clear: Mother's Day isn't
enough.

What new moms actually need isn’t a day. It’s real, sustained support.

We’ve normalized an experience where:
- New moms are left to figure it out, and piece together ‘support’ to get through one of their most vulnerable life transitions.
- Help shows up too late–when moms have already reached their breaking point.
- Burnout is addressed by bandaids, instead of real solutions.

Here’s what moms actually deserve:
🌟 Paid leave: That gives her time to heal, adjust, and care for herself
🌟 Childcare: That makes working + parenting possible, not overwhelming and financially draining
🌟 Care that doesn’t stop at 6 weeks: That means maternal and mental health support before, during, AND well after birth
🌟 Real prep for postpartum: Not a system that only reacts when there’s a crisis

Early motherhood shouldn’t be this hard.

It’s not meant to be done alone either. But for too many moms, it is.

And when the experience ends in exhaustion and burnout, too many blame themselves. That’s not a personal failure. It’s a system failure.

So, until we fix our system, here’s how we make it work for us:

For new moms:
- Trust what you’re feeling and care for yourself.
- If something feels ‘off’, don’t wait until it feels ‘bad enough’. Call Postpartum Support International's free hotline: 1-800-944-4773.
- If you’re still fired up from your lived experience and want to turn your rage into action join Chamber of Mothers

For those who support new moms:
- Employers: Offer paid leave and benefits that make her feel whole again
- Health plans and systems: Invest in proactive, whole-person maternity care–and extend it beyond the 6 week postpartum visit
- Loved ones: Check in on mom consistently, not just in moments of crisis

A day is nice. But what moms need most is REAL support–and a system that actually cares.

Every Mothers Day reminds me of what I’m fighting for. And gives me more fuel to keep advocating for the next mom.
