We all need to speak up for MN

What we do now will shape the country our kids live in | 5 min read

“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

People ask me: Is it worth speaking out? Don’t you worry about your safety?

Of course I do.

But exercising our 1st Amendment rights is a privilege I’ll never take for granted.

What worries me more is the cost of doing nothing.

Right now, many of us in Minnesota are on edge. Our daily routines have changed. Our communities, especially people of color, are living in constant fear and stress.

Everyone deserves to live in this country feeling safe, valued, and treated with dignity. To move through their own neighborhood with security, not anxiety. To speak out with confidence without feeling targeted.

The question I keep coming back to isn’t: ‘What happens to me if I speak out’?

It’s: ‘What happens to my kids if I don’t?’

I want my kids to grow up:
- Going to school without being judged for the color of their skin or hair
- Playing outside with their buddies without fear
- Feeling safe at their favorite library, grocery store, or immigrant-owned family restaurant
- Being seen in their community like they belong
- Feeling welcome, and free to experience joy, wherever they are in the U.S.

Just weeks ago, we were enjoying the holidays in Minnesota–running errands, visiting Santa, walking Stone Arch Bridge. Doing all the things a family of four does.

Today, Minnesota has been thrown into a crisis that arrived overnight. We’re scared, burned out, and don’t know when it will end.

We honor Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Two Minnesotans who embodied dangerous unselfishness and showed up for their communities.

Now isn't the time to look away or be complacent. Silence doesn’t keep people safe. It doesn’t protect our rights, and it doesn’t stop violence.

We ALL have a responsibility to speak up–especially for those without protection of privilege. What we do now will shape the world our kids grow up in.

We have power, and our 1st Amendment rights. Let’s channel our outrage into action that cares for everyone.
