Maternal health isn’t just a moms issue. It’s an everyone issue.
Here’s the current reality in the U.S.:
- We have the highest maternal death rate of any high-income country, and more than 80% of those deaths are preventable.
- More than 50% of rural counties have no hospital-based OB services.
- 21,000 babies are stillborn each year. More than 40% occur during labor and birth and are preventable.
Last week, Chamber of Mothers showed up in D.C. with an agenda: Move 3 bipartisan maternal health bills forward:
🌟 SHINE for Autumn Act (H.R.5469/S.2858): Improves stillbirth data, research, education, and awareness to prevent avoidable loss
🌟 Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act (H.R.1254/S.380): Supports rural hospitals and prepares providers to handle OB emergencies
🌟Connected MOM Act (H.R.4977/S.2621): Expands awareness of remote monitoring tools–like blood pressure and glucose devices–that detect pregnancy complications early
We’re not asking for major reforms. We’ll take any wins, big or small, that save lives and move us forward from the status quo.
We can all agree that no child or mother should be lost to an avoidable death.
