“Moms in Minnesota can’t afford the cost of doing nothing.”
☝️That was the intro for the packets we left with legislators in D.C. during last week’s Chamber of Mothers national fly-in.
Our Minnesota Chapter had one goal: Share the real stories of new and pregnant moms who’ve been impacted by recent federal enforcement activity.
Since Renee Good’s fatal shooting in January, our state has carried grief and fear. For immigrants and people of color, the impact on maternal care is especially heartbreaking.
Here are some stories we shared with MN Representatives Angie Craig, Betty McCollum, and Kelly Morrison:
- “A patient skipped her 21-week ultrasound. That night she went into preterm labor and lost her baby. She now has anxiety and depression.”
- “Moms aren’t seeing their NICU babies until discharge weeks later. They’re too afraid to come and go from the hospital.”
- “Pregnant patients are starving to the point of passing out. They’re ending up in ER rooms.”
- “Referrals to our mobile clinic jumped from 30 to 450+. That’s far beyond what current reimbursement can support.”
This is only a fraction of the stories we’re hearing on the ground.
Prenatal care should be the standard. Right now, that’s completely shifted for too many families. Providers are trying to fill care gaps and it’s not sustainable.
These stories made the issue real and urgent. When legislators hear from their constituents, it’s harder for them to look away.
